Ever Thought of Monetizing Your Exit Traffic?

I don´t know how long this method has been around and I haven´t really come across many people monetizing exit traffic apart from those annoying “customer service chats” that tell you that you can now get some sort of discount or whatever.
But the other day I came across another service that I hadn´t heard of before and I started thinking back whether I had ever seen anybody trying to monetize their exit traffic this way.
I continued reading the site and the more I thought of it, the more I actually liked it so I decided to sign up with the program and insert the code on some of my pages.
The more I think of it, the better I like the idea, so I thought I´d tell you a bit about just how it works and why, so far, I like the idea of monetizing your exit traffic this way.
How Monetizing Exit Traffic Works
There is a variety of programs and systems you can use to capture the visitors attention when they have decided to leave your site, like those intrusive “chat operators” that just keep writing the standard messages over and over again, have some exit popup open all of a sudden and more annoying things.
ExitJunction however offers the ability of actually offering more value to those visitors that found your site through a search engine. Imagine a visitor looking for something in particular and clicked the link to your site, had a quick look and felt it wasn´t really what he/she was looking for.
Their first instinct is to hit the back button to go straight back to the search engine and see if there is another place that does offer the information he/she wanted to find.
So you had the hit to your site, you didn´t have the information they were looking for and they are gone again, back to the search engine looking for more information. Too bad for you, too bad for your visitors so you could say that is a lose-lose situation.
ExitJunction now gives you the opportunity to turn that lose-lose situation into a win-win one. By placing a simple code between the <head> </head> code on all your webpages (if you are using wordpress, that is really easy peasy to do!) you get a way to monetize your exit traffic if they had found your website through a search engine.
What happens next is that when they do decided your website isn´t what they were looking for and hit that exit button to look for more search results, instead of going straight back to the search engine, they will get on a webpage offering more websites related to the search they had made before.
So in reality you are offering your visitor more sites to look at that match the search they were doing that brought them to your site. That is a win situation for them I´d say because really all that you are doing is suggestion other sites that might interest them and hey, that is what they were looking for in the first place, right?
But all of a sudden, that can turn into a win situation for you as well, seeing that if they find something on that exit page you offer them (looking very similiar to a search page) and they click on it, you will get paid!
I thought that was a pretty cool win-win situation there which made me decide to go for it and give it a try.
The positive side about monetizing your exit traffic this way
- It is completely non-intrusive
- It offers an extra service to those visitors that found your site through a search engine
- It gives you another way to monetize your website without being pushy
The negatives
- You monetize your website
*scratching my head*
Now in my book that really doesn´t sound negative at all!
The thing I was a little worried about at first is that the search page would show up any time your visitor hits the back button, but after setting the code up on one of my website and do a little playing around with it, it turns out this only works if your visitor came to your site from a search engine, so anytime they have found your website through other means, hit the back button while navegating your site or whatever, all works the way it usually works, so that is perfect!
In other words, it won´t disturb your regular visitors at all, nor won´t it interfere with the normal visits, the only way people get to see the special page you can make money with is when they found your site through the search engine, land on your page and hit the back button without looking around on other pages on your site.
Have a look and see how it works yourself, it might just be what you were looking for without even realizing it!

Sounds interesting…
Glad it’s not a popup. Although that way, when the visitor simply closes the tab he gets nothing.

yeah, thought it looks interesting to, especially since you are not bothering your regular visitors plus actually giving those that were looking for information more places to look

So, what’s the loot? Anything worth messing with your header file?

well, all you really need to do is add the code they give you to your header.php file between the
andI placed it right before the and it works without trouble, not really messing if you ask me LOL
The loot? you mean why would you do that? It would monetize your exit traffic coming from search engines, when they don´t find on first sight what they were looking for and hit the back button they see a page with more search results, clicks will get you dough. That´s the loot

Frankly speaking, I hate those exit popups.. Just stops me from re visiting the site again..

hey Ben,
yeah, I hate those popup exits as well, plus those “customer chat services” popping up out of nowhere, pitching you another offer when you already opted to close the browser, however I do think this is a bit different, since it targets visitors coming from search engines, and when hitting the back button to go back to more search results, they will see a page with just that, related search results. So no popups, no customer service chat, nothing like that.
Just a page with related search results to what they were looking for in the first place….

Hey now that works pretty well I see, and it really isn’t a popup. Nice!

I thought it was pretty cool, so hope it will work well for ya!
Yeah, changed it last night, going against my personal rule of never working on themes and such in the evening, so I must have missed that. Already changed though

Sounds like an interesting concept, but I’m going to have to find a blog through a website, then see what it looks like first. But I think the question Alex might have been asking is what kind of money is possible to make?

hey Mitch, nice to see you here!
if you want to see how it works, just find memyselfandiblog.com in google, go to the blog and then hit the return button and you will see the “search page” offered to your visitors coming from google that hit the return button to go back to search results.
The money, to be honest it is still a little early to give you specific details on that since I have only had it up for a few days, and it would completely depend on the traffic you are getting through search engines, but think of it this way:
* It is more than if you don´t have it installed
* It is not annoying your regular visitors
* It is not intrusive to the people finding your place through google
* It will give your exit traffic more search results they were looking for anyways
So far I have it installed on a few “low traffic” blogs and even though I think it is way too short to give actual stats, average CTR is between 10 and 17%, highest eCPM so far that I have is $12.35 if that is what you are asking.
I am assuming these rates will only improve over time, with more participants, more traffic and more people advertising on the results page.
If it is worth the “trouble” to copy paste a small code? I see it as the difference between nothing (people leaving your site without any ROI) and at least getting something out of it, so that is for you to decide
but for me it sure beats annoying exit monetization options like popups and customer service chat popping up trying to sell you a “better offer”.
Hope that answers your question

I did the test, and the first thing I was surprised about is that when I typed in “memyselfandi”, your blog didn’t come up at all; stunned by that! After adding “blog”, you obviously do come up. I saw the page, and, well, it does offer some choices, but man, it’s ugly! That pure white with that little yellow strip; do they allow for any color customization at all?
Mitch’s last blog post..My Big RSS Subscriber Contest!
[Reply]
@ Mitch
as far as I know there are no options to customize, it is just a standard “search results page” nothing more to it. Maybe in future they will, who knows

I wonder what our friends at Google think about this kind of stuff.
Being a google dissident myself , I’m not sure, but think it is against google’s quality guidelines not to give surfers the opportunity to hit the back button without disturbance to return to their search results…
watch you PR baby ….
Cheers,
Alex

OMG… Where’s Denis’ edit comments plugin when we need it…!!!
I was “winking” at you several times on that last comment, but I put it in triangular brackets and it probably got sifted out by WP as html tags…
