Hacking widgets
Weekend has arrived and in a bit I am actually going to turn off the computer but first I wanted to share a thought, or maybe better said, visualization. You see, I am a big fan of “The Secret” because it is showing me how to improve my life one step at a time. And no, I am not one of those who think “cool, I am just going to believe I am rich and then one day I actually will be.” but I do believe that good energy and positive thinking helps me achieve my goals.
For this post, I am going to share a visualization I am using, to remind me on a daily base of where I am heading and seeing my goals already achieved. I am sure you must have come across a widget created by Dane Carlson of business-opportunities.biz. I believe this widget is a perfect example of how to create buzz and back links and it is probably one of the most popular ones today.
It is a fun way to show off the value of your website/blog, but that is all it is. Just a fun widget that might make you smile when seeing a number, which supposedly represents the worth of your site.
I used to have it on my blog swell, until I realised one thing. It is a static widget. That is right, a static widget with hardly any importance to it other than make you smile and create a huge number of back links, big round of applause to you Dane!
Apart from believing in good energy, I also believe in the power of visualisation, so I have hacked the widget a little bit, not showing the value of my blog according to some weird calculation that I don’t even understand, but showing the value it has for me right now.
So tell me, what is your blog really worth to you?

Neat trick! Now I wonder how many other blogs display hacked widgets – it’d certainly explain many I’ve seen showing a high value, which I couldn’t for the life of me understand… so thanks for explaining one of life’s mysteries;-D

LOL. when I was new to blogging, I thought that this was real. I was like–Whoaaa!!! Until I realized that almost every blog on the internet is worth more than $10,000 even if it was a spam blog. But I have to admit that it is a big ego boost to see it.

I have seen this widget a lot but I never realized that it was pointing a backlink back at the creator’s site. That is a really clever idea.
I noticed you have Courtney Tuttle in your blogroll. He is ranking well for his chosen keyword and I am certain that putting a link with it in the anchor text of all the free themes he has a available certainly helped.
It is ideas like this that can really increase your SERP rankings, but I can just never seem to think of any original ones.

Well, as you can see, it really does not say anything, it is easily manipulated and it has proven to be the greatest linkbait for whoever come up with the idea
@EC I think Courtney rocks! His blog is one of the few I am still subscribed to because of the huge amount of straight forward, high quality posts on SEO and link building.
Sometimes it is not that important to be original, as long as your working towards a specific goal taking the steps needed to get there. giving out free wp themes with a link is of course great, if you are good at designing a useful theme that is
